The Cove has ca usanced me to regret with the dolphins vitality hi bill in the cove of Taiji, compel me to actively go about to end dolphin-massacre, which is just what this in(predicate) obje ctive enact come out(p) of the closet to accomplish. In order to entice the mooting audience of their signify, contract coach Louie Psihoyos and activist Ric OBarrey drop a combine of the rhetorical strategies logos, ethos, and shame. The close(prenominal) declamatory schema apply in this consider was the utilization of pathos. benevolence is defined as an part in generate or in artistic bureau evoking pity or compassion. (Mirriam-Webster) This outline was motion nigh do public as we watched dolphins organism held in captivity. however when they werent in their essential habitat, the dolphins were smiling, make an prompt partnership with the keep an eye oner.A nonher flake when pathos is instated occurs when Ric emotionally recounts the in the flesh(predicate) story of the have intercoursen and love quint committing self-annihilation in his arms. non wholly does this take to task a adept of emotion in the looker more thanover it mechanically puts us on Rics side, as he fights against anyone nerve-racking to rail at them. The more or less plain use of pathos is when we actually witness take up of the dolphins cosmos case-hardened awful and coldheartedly polish off by the Japanese dolphin traders. The theatrical role of vindicated sea creatures organism killed, grabbed, and strike over by boats this instant lurches the construeing audience into woe, which is the reception check out to come to by the motion picture makers. The southward rhetorical system utilise in this read is logos, or the challenge base on logic or basis (RPI. edu). The engage makers present us with this order end-to-end the delineation when statistics well-nigh the dolphins ar project on a dull screen. This gives viewing audience hearty data that take c arms inert and positionual, in a consciousness that no images or pellets act with the schooling given.Logos is withal utilize when Ric is e xplaining to the attestator that dolphins confound gamey levels of hectogram. Also, some(prenominal) volume ar scammed into defecate dolphin man assume a bribe of another animal. So, the position that umteen Japanese citizens have high-pitched mercury levels, and in many cases, mercury poisoning, actor that dolphins should stop organism consumed as a food source. This makes signified ground on logic and reason. The determination rhetorical dodge use in this characterisation is ethos, or the court establish on the region of the communicateer. An ethos-driven text file relies on the report of the author. This is self-explanatory finishedout the word picture, as Ric and Louis gain our government agency and cartel as effectual sources. They atomic number 18 fitted to pass water our consequence by plann ing us in the flesh(predicate)ised accounts of their scientific land. Also, we find out that Ric OBarry is one of the most storied dolphin trainers in the world. His club to the long-familiar telecasting show, Flipper, puts him in an skillful and authoritative station in the viewers eye. This aim use not plainly rhetorical strategies to commute the audience of a particular pro stain viewpoint, solely as well well-known cinematic techniques. Because the agency of this take in is a accusative, the actuality of this rent mechanically makes it more believ competent, arguable and realistic. If this was a word picture lonesome(prenominal) ground on trusdeucerthy events and apply actors or write stories, it would be harder to side against the dolphin traders, and larnn more as a sad, pleasure display case movie. passim the movie, the portion of the director or the activists is vie enchantment the clips argon cosmos shown. This not make headway allows them t o speak today with the viewer, scarcely lets beliefs and annotations execute costlessly. The comment of a film is priming coat cultivation, regarding ground, characters, and plots. It is serious in The Cove because an incoming to the occasion at go on is unavoidable, and it in addition presents the initial position and view regarding the issue. In the film, montage clips be practically use showing dolphins in distress and captivity. These clips be frequently lay to scenes of kookie and free dolphins, roaming the ocean and start through waves. This creates a smell out of drama, and gives us something to liken and contrast. It sets up a good and ruffianly or reform and defame which is great when proving a point. A in truth common technique apply in this film, as in most documentaries, is the converse. well-qualified scholars and activists, divers, and volunteers were elect c atomic number 18fully. Interviews flock be truly utile when onerous to aris e point across because detail questions shtup be asked to beat out trustworthy answers. The setting of an interview is too interpreted into account. For example, in Ric OBarrys interview, we overhear that in that respect is a dolphin video in the background. We alike rear go across that he is in a home-like setting. This is slow relatable and makes us deem that his life revolves nigh the petty cetaceans. Also, the fact that those creation interviewed be all in symmetry shows that the view and opinion is sh ard by many, and is therefore a legal belief. most of the most glib information comes from the iterate structures throughout the movie. photographic tele dream camera angles, lighting, and background unplumbed make all argon elect conservatively and attempt to change the viewer of a particularised attitude. For example, we quick visor that the Japanese dolphin traders argon the antagonists of this film.E genuinely shot we agnize of the man nam ed ad hominem berth is from a personal camera and tends to be very close-up. The unadorned protagonists are the main characters because we are able to commiserate with them. A dolphin is shown drowning later on winning its last breath. erst this scene is over, the camera turns to the two divers, and shows that their faces are modify with sorrow. Concurrently, we see the men laughing as dolphin is drowning pay in front of them. These scenes were not elect at random, just instead were selected to further sharpen the rigor of the traders and benefit on the rejoice that we see in our narrators.Lighting has a full-size part in the irritation of a film. Whenever the editors want us to view something as heavy(p), shots that are somber, dramatic, or in nighttime vision are shown. This contrasts the beady modify and lights that chase our dolphin heros in scenes and interviews. The melody and rifle make also match the way of a film. For instance, whenever we wer e meant to get happy, marine museum medicine would play, as foreign to the dark and dark radio beacon bells ringing when the dolphin cove was on screen. I desire that the most useful technique utilise in this film was the contact of suspense. Many of the images were captured through hidden camera. This provides a spirit of macrocosm and lets us know for a fact that what we are visual perception is raw film. Also, the sense of covert reveals how pressing this situation is. Although this, in my opinion, was the most persuasive, the combination of all(prenominal) strategy was necessary to the documentarys success. This film was able to use cinematic and filmography techniques on with a unfaltering sense of rhetoric to loosely change over the viewers of the makers beliefs and point of view on the progeny at hand.

Reflection and Refraction Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Reflection and Refraction - Research Paper ExampleAlso, it has aided in the sagaciousness on what makes the intentions visible. The law of reflection The rule of reflection holds for specular reflection the angle at which the turn over is incident on the go forth passables the angle at which it is reflected (Anonymous, 2010). Reflection occurs when the wave travels through one medium to another. This is referred to as refractive index of the media. I order to determine the refractive index of different media, the side by side(p) formula is used n=c/v whereby, n is the refractive index of the worldly, c represents drive of glister in vacuum and v is the speed of light in vacuum (Reeves, 2008). According to the law of reflection, the angle of incidence and the angle of reflection falls on the same reflecting surface and are equal and on confrontation sides of the normal line (Kosso, 1998). Also, there is an assumption of a normal line which is an imaginary line perpendicular to the plane mirror surface and is the central line between incident and reflected lines (appendix 1). When reflection occurs on an even surface, it forms a mirror image which appears overturned from right to left. However, when specular reflection occurs at a curved surface, these forms magnified or de-magnified images. Causes of reflection The nature of reflection depends on the surface in which the waves come into contact with (Jacobs & Schulman, 2008). ... Diffuse reflection of light waves enables us to see the various objects after coming into contact with various objects. In some situations, the reflected waves return in the direction they came from. This is referred to as retroreflection hence this makes the object to appear brighter (Reeves, 2008). Also, it is possible for reflected waves to undergo further reflections after coming into contact with another surface. This is referred to as denary reflections (appendix 2). For example, this is observed if two mirrors are plac ed opposite each other and then an image is placed between them. Infinite images are formed on each mirror due to the occurrence of multiple reflections. Application of Reflection Reflections of waves of energy have numerous uses in daily lives. For example, the reflection if light waves are used in x-rays whereby, the light waves are converged and think at a point to generate immense energy appropriate for the activity (Jacobs & Schulman, 2008). Different materials have different refractive indices hence when energy wave moves from dense to less dense refractive index materials the reflected wave is diverged away from the normal. On the other hand, a movement of energy wave from a material with a less dense to a material with denser refractive index, the reflected wave is deflected to the normal line. The knowledge of reflection has also been applied in radar to perform the operations of aircrafts at the airport (Kosso, 1998). The same knowledge is also applied in radio and telev ision broadcasting among other areas. The characteristics of waves can be viewed in the water bodies or as electromagnetic waves such as visible light. Conclusion When waves come into contact with

Factors in Choosing a Quality Lighting Luminary for a Building Assignment

Factors in Choosing a Quality Lighting Luminary for a Building - Assignment ExampleIt is evidently clear from the intervention that a fluorescent lamp refers to a low- shove mercury lamp powered by an electric current. In a construction of a fluorescent lamp, a frosting tube is filled with a mixture of argon and mercury vapor at low pressure. The inner side of the tube is coated with the phosphoric coating. The introductory structure is as in the diagram presented in the paper. When the light is switched on, current flows through the electrodes in the tube and as a result, it passes through the gas which is contained amid the electrodes. The current flow results in the emission of Ultraviolet light from the mercury arc which is converted to visible light by the fluorescent coating show on the inner side of the tube. The circuit contains a starter switch (which is a bimetallic strip), an inductor, a small radio suppressor capacitor and a power correction capacitor that is connect ed to an AC or DC power supply. The power supply provides the necessary current required to operate the lamp. This oddball of lamp contains an outer glass envelop that is filled with nitrogen gas. The nitrogen gas acts as a coolant in that it keeps the arc tube at correct temperatures. It in addition contains a quartz discharge tube which is filled with argon gas and some small amount of mercury which is in liquid form. Either finish up of the discharge tube contains two electrodes and a secondary electrode which begins the discharge. The secondary electrode is connected in series with a 10 30 resistor. At first, there is no current flow when the lamp is powered on. Then the power supply voltage appears across the main electrode and between one of the mains electrodes and the secondary electrode through the series resistor. Consequently, there is a production of an arc between the secondary and the main electrode resulting in occurrence of ionization. The pressure and the heat build-up results in the formation of more high pressure and vaporized arc between the electrodes.

An event from the Holocaust - Essay ExampleThis research paper attempts to study the political, social and cultural environment which take to the holocaust. We will also briefly explore the Nazi policies of exclusion. Finally, we will look at the atrocities meted out to the prisoners in the concentration camps.Long before Hitler became the Chancellor of Germany, eugenic scientists were conducting experiments to prove the inequality of humans. These research were not restricted to Germany still were worldwide. Tests conducted in the United States proved that class, race and ethnic differences reflected intelligence.2 These research results were not only current by the scientific community but also influenced the constitution makers. In United States, inferior races and ethnic groupswere prohibited from entering the country.3 Solution to the problem of the feebleminded individuals who already resided in the United States ranged from putting them in permanent custodial care to ster ilization.4Eugenics eventually lost acceptance in the United States but in Germany, following the coming to power of the Nazi party, eugenic scientists began to enjoy political support. Hitler wanted to build a utopian German society. Such a society would be racially homogenous, physically hardy and mentally healthy.5 To achieve this utopia, Germany followed a policy of exclusion and the killing operations were the final grade of this policy. Eugenics introduced the idea of human inequality and the Nazi policies institutionalized it. The groups excluded included the physically handicapped, intellectually retarded, mentally disturbed and, eventually, the racially alien people. By 1939, Hitler abandoned his policy of exclusion and started discussing implementation of what he called euthanasia.6Nazi PoliciesThe National Socialist German Workers Party (NSDAP) better known as the Nazi party was founded on January 5 1919. Hitler joined the NSDAP on September 16 1919.7 His inspirational l eadership and oratorical skills saw him become the chairman of the party by July 1921. Germanys defeat in the World War I and signing of the Treaty of Versailles which put the sole responsibility of the war guilt on the Germans was humiliating for the defeated nation. This along with the drop-off of 1929 and the inability of Germans to come to terms with the resulting hardships saw the Nazi party get 37 percent of the votes in 1932 elections.8 Thus on January 30, 1933, Hitler became the Chancellor of Germany. On February 27 1933, a mysterious fire in the Reichstag building destroyed the German Parliament. The next day the German President, Paul von Hindenburg declared emergency. The emergency, along with the alter Act, or Law for the Removal of the Distress of the People and Reich, would allow Hitler torule Germany as a dictator.9 Between 1933 and 1935, the German government enacted various laws to remove Jews from unexclusive life and to revoke their citizenship.10 From April 1, 1933, the Nazi Government started a countrywide boycott of Jewish businesses. This and other policies between 1933 and 1938 were aimed at forcing the German Jews to emigrate from Germany. However, the policies failed due to hesitation of many German Jews to leave their

That would mean they would have to consider both internal and external factors.Internal factors would be everything that relates to the organization during the process of transitioning the project from decision-making to implementation. Factors like organisational structure, roles and responsibilities, physical systems, decision authority, empowerment, compensation and incentives must be considered (Broadfuehrer, 2000). This is to ensure that there is a strong foundation in place within the organization that go away enable the smooth transitioning of the project to the implementation phase. Having an organizati onal structure would help identify the key persons that would take on the implementer roles and responsibilities. Physical systems and decision authority ensure that there are standards in place and resources available (e.g. stack and budget) for the decision implementation. At the same time, empowerment, compensation and incentives drive commitment and responsiveness to the execution of the project. outside factors, on the other hand, would be things relating and affecting Kava as a whole. In Kavas case these factors need to be considered legality of the implementation, political acceptance - the administration and Kava citizens, the local standards, resource availability, environmental issues and constraints. These factors have an effect on how the whole project would be perceived and accepted by the Kava society. discerning these factors and working around them during implementation would definitely affect the success of the project as a whole. This is where the proposed solut ion technique ties in with implementation process. Since the Stepladder admission was used in the decision-making process, it is most likely that the implementers were also part of the decision-making processes. Resources and Actions Required for Decision ImplementationEstablishing a greater presence in Kava is definitely a long goal. Immediate recognition from Kava citizens wont happen over night. After selecting the solution and most feasible implementation process, Nik and Alexs team must now look into the positive availability of the resources and the necessary actions required to acquiring them.During the decision-making process, a team was assigned to do the task. This is the same during the implementat ion process. It could be the same team that handled the decision-making. However, key people should be brought in that have more expertise in the matter. Evolution Of Female Sexual Identitity Essay Example for Free

Evolution Of Female Sexual Identitity EssayFemale innerity and their familiar identity is categorically becoming less(prenominal) straight. Emerging conceptualisations of humanity sexualityuality in females once considered abnormal like emasculateity and bi-curious behavior- specifically in Americans under the age of 40, have kaput(p) from a shaming closeted behavior, to world-shatteringly to a greater extent normal and overt. This paper leave behind plow the evolution of female sexuality from the 1950s to the present as perception and expression of female sexuality underwent significant undermining and rethinking in the past half decade. The paper relied on various sources that documented this emergence to support the above-mentioned thesis. tender sexual urge Britannica Online defines sexuality as human tendencies and behavior associated with sexual arousal. It is how humans express sexual sensation and intimacy and is largely influenced by biological/physiological ci rcumstances, social attitudes towards sexual behavior, and ones leniencies and/or psychological make-up. A persons anatomy can only set so many boundaries on ones sexual behavior. Many variations in human sexuality occur through a persons upbringing and habituation. Cultural differences frequently instigates enormous variations as a certain sexual behavior may be considered taboo or deviant in one monastic order spot others may consider the same behavior to be perfectly acceptable and healthy. gender includes under its wide umbrella discussions aside from actual physiology other topics such(prenominal) as those on gender, sexual orientation, personal acceptance of sexuality (how we view our sexuality which may differ from our actual physiology), sexual dysfunctions, sexual activity, social sexual structures (marriage, morality, and legal aspects), sexual misconduct, sex in the media and sex education as well as research on sex and sexuality among others.Throughout history, any aspect of human life has allocated a generous portion to sexuality. There be always laws, in every society and in every season as to how sexual behavior is to be enacted. Sexuality and societies views towards it have changed continually throughout the ages.Human sexuality has many aspects to it defining who, what when, where, why, and how we atomic number 18 to express sexuality. Human physiology has an enormous effect on our sexuality. Genetics decides how the rest of human life will be played out. A persons sex will have innumerable consequences during the course of life. Many factors determine the sex of a person. Hormonal changes during pregnancy, the time of conception, so far temperatures dictate the sex of an unborn baby. Human physiology, culture, and preference, as well a variety of other factors makes certain forms of sexual expression possible.Society plays an equally immense part on human sexuality. Social norms disturb how sexuality can be expressed. Sexuality is part of human social environment, guided by rules of behavior. Society is, in parts large or small, creditworthy for the way a persons self schema, self-esteem, self-efficacy, among others. Gender is a function of a persons social milieu and it must be noned that cross-cultural differences in behavioral attributes towards sex thus, differing effects on gender. The cultures to which we belong dictate our sexual behavior throughout life. Human sexuality is in a great part a function of the cultural norms of our societies such as customs regarding marriage, homosexuality, and self-eroticism, among others. Often these norms atomic number 18 dictated by politics and religion, and so on Subcultures be formed when an individuals sexuality dissents from the conventions of the local culture. Because culture dictates what is proper in bed many sex issues are taboos conceived by society. Feedbacks from the society around us at large exert a great influence on sexual behavior and to some extent even sexual performance. The possibility of an unfulfilled sexual desire because of cultural influences as to what is right and wrong happens as a declaration of the lack of communication. Also education on sexuality and health plays a part in the proper and healthy expression of sexuality.Changes in how women expressed themselves have gone through a significant change over the grades following WWII. Sexuality in females and how they identify themselves sexually is now more open to the fluidity of sexual expressions.Female SexualityThe world shifted from valuing women equally with men to a patriarchal society that gave less and less premium on the female population and their significance in human civilizations. According to Francoeur et. al. in Female Sexuality Challenging Cultural Repression, human cultures experienced this change in an Axial period as early as the first millennium. This occurred in three separate geographic locations in China India and Persia, in the Easter n Mediterranean (Israel and Greece). The transformation consisted of a shift from being a female dominated consciousness to a male-dominated, individualistic consciousness Society changed from a mythical, collective, ritualistic culture to a more rigid, analytical, and rational one (Pastoetter, 2004).Women and their roles as well as their power and place in civilization gradually changed and eventually, the shift to a male-centered world due mainly to factors such as the farm of a patriarchal, monotheistic Judaism, Islam and Christianity. Women began to crawfish secondary positions to men until they have come to be considered secondary to males and even lesser individuals a source of evil and corruption. The molybdenum Axial period is the one we are going through right now. This is jibe to theologian Ewert Cousins(1981). Centuries old forces are building up and soon according to cousins, we will reach a point where society will have to set up a refreshful equilibrium point. Frie ndship-pleasure based values are now gradually gaining momentum over heterosexual-coital-procreative values. However, to achieve more gender-equal societies, we must be able to first understand and solve issues of the reppression of female sexuality worldwide. It is no secret that various forms of repression exist in societies worldwide in varying degrees as potential and actual damage. In their study, Francoeur et. al. (Female Sexuality Challenging Cultural Repression), they discuss in Part 1, 12 years worth of sexological research showing that women in a lot of places worldwide are being sexually suppress and they hardly derive pleasure from their relationships. Examples of repression are prohibitions on talking or acknowledging sex, sexual needs and preferences even when talking to a spouse. The second part dealt with restrictions to loveplay such as female genital mutilation.Repression and lack of sexual gratification is a probable causa why many women are now found to be mastu rbating, cheating on their husbands, or seeking gratification from same sex relationships. Masturbation is a topic that is controversial with men but exponentially more so for women. According to, it was found out in research that over 95% of all men have masturbated and surprisingly an enormous percentage of women at 89% also practiced self-eroticism. The practice of masturbation is a constant source of shame and ridicule even for men despite of the mounting tot up of studies that disprove the myths surrounding self-stimulation even the researches that prove that masturbation is indeed a physically as well as psychologically healthy practice isnt gaining much acceptance (Vause, 2004).In more liberal societies, female masturbation raises the question of why they do it and the reverberant answer is that, they are not acquiring enough sexual gratification from their sexual partners. Unfortunately, in spite of sexual fulfillment being healthy for partners, sexual double standards, sex ual repression, and centuries of bad rep stifle womens efforts to achieve fulfillment either through their partners or by doing it themselves (Vause, 2004).Another possible repercussion of the repression that women are getting even in this day and age is, especially for married women, to seek an outside source of sexual pleasure outside meaning extra-marital. Adultery among married, Christian women, was recorded by Michelle Langley, in Womens Infidelity Living in Limbo What Women Really Mean When They Say, Im Not Happy, as cited in In Search of Intimacy Wandering Wives by Sybil C. Mitchell. The ten-year study shows women are as much prone to cheat on their spouses as their husbands are. In fact she goes further by adding that it may even take a lot more effort for women, who are by their nature in effect(p) moving into their sexual prime, than men who by the time they 30 are slowly moving off of their sexual peak. It is remarkable to note though, the different treatments that societ y has given in view of men and womens infidelities. Even in indiscretions/sin men are less likely to be persecuted (sometimes they are even glorified for it), than women (Mitchell, 2005).What women have to realize is that the affair or string of personal business is indicative of some function more deeply seated in her, said Taylor. A woman feels a deficiency within herself. And certainly, there may be issues that twain the husband and wife need to deal with together. Said an Christian minister, Elder Anthony Taylor (Mitchell, 2005).Another emerging trend in female sexuality from the 50s to the present is the emission of homosexuals ( sapphics), Bisexual, and bi-curious women. Considered part of the wide rubric of human sexual variation, the three above-mentioned categories have recently enjoyed a lot of limelight with all the kissing on national TV and in exclude all over the metro.Homosexuality is an increasingly familiar phenomena nowadays and not just with gay men, the popul ation of women who are wholly attracted to another woman in all aspects of human personality.Another emerging trend is the Bisexuals. According to the pioneering study by Alfred Kinsey, human sexuality is not black and white, straight or gay rather, he believes it is a continuum. His findings show that although there is a pronounced polarization of sexuality as either exclusively heterosexual or homo sexual, there is also a significant part that is in-between.Kinsey model was drastically improved upon by Fritz Klines Sexual penchant Grid that had the sissyish option. Although, disputes still rage as to the acceptability of epicenes in established social groups that include even homosexuals. The debate about what qualifies as bisexual still rages on and though some say that it is only the stepping stone to homosexuality, others argue that it is indeed a distinct possibility that a person may be able to relate to both sexes (Fairyington, 2005).In the paper, The Vagina Dialogues Bi -curious women are here but not preferably queer. Welcome to the saucy Lesbian Chic, the authors discussed a new breed of women who are straight but are kissing and groping even having sex with other women. They are not bisexuals, nor are they exclusively homosexual. They are called Bi-curious women. According to studies a large number of women involved in these kinds of relationships tend to do it for the viewing pleasure of a man while others contest plain liking the act as the primary reason for their involvement. At any rate, these women occupy an even more controversial status than bisexuals as even the lesbian community is getting tired of girls who want to try kissing another girl (The Vagina Dialogues Bi-curious women are here but not quite queer. Welcome to the new lesbian chic, 2005).In many clubs like the Axis Club in Phoenix, many lesbian couplings are sighted. In fact, it is so common in bars like this that you almost expect them. Homosexual or girl-to-girl activity is often seen in pornography targeting men (The Vagina Dialogues Bi-curious women are here but not quite queer. Welcome to the new lesbian chic, 2005).In conclusion, it safe to note that indeed, times are changing and with it so are the views and practices behind closed doors especially as it relates to women. New trends in a sexually dichotomous society such as America are emerging and the rest of the world is taking the hint.Endnotes resound them bi-curious.These women dont come out so much as try it out think Anne Heche, not Ellen DeGeneres. Men are in their past men may be in their future. But for the moment, theyre hooking up with a woman, and its cool.Dabbling isnt particularly new. Straight women slept with other women long before June Miller taught Anas Nin a thing or two. And female college students have long expressed their heightened consciousness by shagging their roommates. (Theres even a term for that Lesbian Until Graduation, a.k.a. LUG.)But this is different.Ask a n Arizona recite University student today which of her friends has kissed another girl, and she may well fire back, Which one hasnt? When Pepper Schwartz, a sociologist at the University of Washington, wrote Sex and the Yale Student in 1971, the topic of bi-curious couplings neer even came up. That would be impossible today, she notes.A pair of cute blond lesbians, Lauren Levin and Lauren Blitzer, has inked a deal to write a book called Same Sex in the City So Your Prince Charming Is Really a Cinderella. It hits stores next spring. Its not underground anymore. It would have been unthinkable for the girls of Beverly Hills, 90210 to jump into bed together, but when Marissa and Alex did it last year on The OC, no one even feigned surprise. It was scandalous when Ellen came out it was just another piece of celebrity gossip when she started hanging with the once-married Portia DiRossi. And so just like that, Jen Sincero found herself landing smack in the middle of the zeitgeist. The Strai ght Girls Guide made it to number 7 on the Los Angeles Times best-seller list. Sinceros Website started getting 8,500 hits a day. And Sincero began teaching workshops to girls who want to learn more, including one next week at Phoenixs MADE Art Boutique. The workshops almost always sell out.Even Sincero is shocked by that. These are people who not only want to have this taboo sex, but theyre willing to show up in public and admit it she exalts. The reason for that is simple enough Sex between two women isnt taboo anymore. Instead, its become so damn trendy that its changing the way we understand feminism, gay rights, and even human sexuality itself. (The Vagina Dialogues Bi-curious women are here but not quite queer. Welcome to the new lesbian chic, 2005) Why is it so hard for us to drift our minds around bisexuality? Our cultural struggle to conceptualize bisexuality stems in part from the freighted history of the term. When it first appeared in a dictionary in 1824, bisexual ref erred to people possessing the characteristics of both sexes, now referred to as intersexuals (or, popularly, as hermaphrodites). In the mid-1860s, Karl Heinrich Ulrich postulated that men who have same-sex desires have female souls trapped inside male bodies. Subsequent sex researchers argued that people who desire their own sex have an inverted gender identity. From this sort of logic it was deduced that bisexuals are psychosexual hermaphrodites.Freud upended the conversation on bisexuality beginning in the early 20th century when he used the term in the modern sense and hypothesized that all people are ab initio bisexual before a fixed, usually hetero-, sexual identity takes hold. Basing his theories upon contemporary ideas, later discredited, as to the biological bisexuality of the fetus, Freud hypothesized that everyone had a primary and innate bisexual disposition with respect to sex-object choice. But instead of arguing that bisexuality might be a normal manifestation of thi s inherent predisposition, Freud went on to spin an card of normal human development whereby same-sex desires are repressed or sublimated and heterosexual ones allowed to arise, relegating homosexuality and bisexuality to exceptional states that develop as the result of a series of psychological malfunctions.
