Australian Business Law Principles of Contract Law
Question: Examine about theAustralian Business Lawfor Principles of Contract Law. Answer: Issue The issue in the current case is to decide if there is an agreement shaped on the record of one-sided offer reached out by offeror Alan or not. Further, the following point is to decide the legally binding liabilities of Alan for the given circumstances. Law For the institution of an agreement, a legitimate offer and acknowledgment is required. At the point when the offeror has stretched out a proposal to numerous offerees, at that point it would be named as one-sided offer. For this situation, it isn't basic for the sanctioning of the agreement that the offeree imparts acknowledgment to the offeror by any method of correspondence. Any individual or people who play out the action or undertaking referenced in the proposal at the latest the predetermined time imparts acknowledgment renting to the arrangement of an enforceable agreement between the gatherings (Paterson, 2015). The OBrien v MGN Ltd [2001] EWCA Civ 1279 case is the observer of this angle. Further, on the off chance that the offeror needs to end the offer, at that point it is fundamental that it must be done before the offeree or offerees have imparted acknowledgment by satisfying the essential condition. It implies on the off chance that the offerees have acknowledged the offer, at that point repudiation of offer can't occur. Since, the proposal in the interest of the offeror is contingent guarantee and offerees has legitimate acknowledgment which bring about the enforceability of legally binding connection (Andrews, 2011). In this respects, Carlill v Carbolic Smoke Ball Co [1892] EWCA Civ 1 case is of specific hugeness. For this situation, the litigant made an ad to open which was a one-sided offer and acknowledged by a few offerees. Be that as it may, the offeror chose to repudiate the offer made in the commercial after the offeree had played out the movement featured in the ad (Richard, 2003) . As indicated by the choice put forth in this defense, offeror will undo ubtedly play out the legally binding obligations in light of the fact that an enforceable agreement was at that point instituted (Carter, 2012). Further, it is critical that when the offeror party has made one-sided offer by choosing a specific method of correspondence, for example, paper ad, banner or others then it is fundamental that the offeror must choose a similar mode for disavowing the offer or, more than likely it would not be viewed as a legitimate repudiation. It is fundamental that thought must be available between the offeror and offeree then just the agreement would be named as enforceable (McKedrick, 2003). Moreover, the sufficiency of thought sum isn't significant as featured in the decision of Chapple v Nestle [1960] AC 87 case. Application Alan the offeror runs a wonder salon named Tender Treats. He has made a one-sided offer by publicizing in the neighborhood paper that Tender Treats would offer the nail treatment/pedicure at a limited cost of $15. At the point when the promotion was distributed in the paper, at that point numerous offerees acknowledged the offer and so as to pick up the offer they showed up to Tender Treats. Notwithstanding, subsequent to seeing loads of individuals, Alan chose to disavow the offer. In this situation, following cases are required to be examined. 40 clients who fundamentally created the notice before the notification and goes up in the window of Tender Treats are lawfully gone into the enforceable agreement with Alan. Since, there is a lawful offer made for the benefit of Alan by posting the notice in the nearby news-paper and when the offerees have played out the activity of showing up the salon then the acknowledgment towards the offer has gotten enforceable on Alan. Thus, Alan is at risk to finish the authoritative liabilities and on the off chance that Alan denies satisfying the liabilities, at that point the clients have the lawful rights to sue Alan for breaking the agreement or case for the harms. Further, the demonstration of Alan of posting a sign on the window of Tender Treats with respect to the repudiation of offer doesn't influence the agreement in light of the fact that according to custom-based law, when the offeree has acknowledged the offer, at that point the offeror can't end the offer. No, 20 clients who don't have ad would not have the option to profit the proposal as it was an essential condition to be satisfied as a major aspect of the offer that they needed to convey the ad. Along these lines, without the commercial, the acknowledgment of the client isn't considered to occur and consequently the Alan doesn't have an enforceable agreement with the 20 clients not conveying promotion. No, it can't be requested for the benefit of the Alan on the grounds that at the hour of broadening one-sided offer, Alan chose a thought measure of $15 for nail trim/pedicure independent of the way that the ordinary charge of nail treatment/pedicure was $60. Alan has made proposal with goal of advancement of salon and not to acquire benefit which he knew about at the hour of putting the commercial. It is on the grounds that sufficiency of thought sum isn't goal and it very well may be seen in the main Chapple v Nestle [1960] AC 87 situation where a chocolate wrapper was viewed as a legitimate thought. No, it isn't right since he made the offer and same has been acknowledged by the offerees and in the event that he needs to deny the offer, at that point he should utilize a similar vehicle of conveying to the offerees for example he should put a paper commercial with respect to the denial of limited time special. For this situation additionally, a one-sided offer is reached out for Alan through creation a notice in the paper and it includes the way that any individual who gets the nail treatment/pedicure from Tender Treats would without a doubt get a date inside seven days. On the off chance that it would not occur, at that point Salon would do a free hair style for that individual. Subsequent to seeing the notice Jill gets the nail trim/pedicure from Alan and doesn't get a date in multi week. It is obvious the gatherings have gone into an agreement on the record of substantial one-sided offer and legitimate acknowledgment and in this manner, Alan needs to do free hair style to Jill or probably she can guarantee for harms. End It is clear from the above conversation that Alan is subject to finish the legally binding liabilities in all cases aside from when clients are not having the notice or, more than likely the honest gatherings can sue him or case for the harms under the arrangement of customary law for breaking contract. Frequency Distributions in Psychology Research
Frequency Distributions in Psychology Research Student Resources Study Guides and Tips Print How Frequency Distributions Are Used In Psychology Research By Kendra Cherry facebook twitter Kendra Cherry, MS, is an author, educational consultant, and speaker focused on helping students learn about psychology. Learn about our editorial policy Kendra Cherry Updated on August 12, 2019 Jeffrey Coolidge / The Image Bank / Getty Images More in Student Resources Study Guides and Tips APA Style and Writing Careers A frequency distribution is a summary of how often different scores occur within a sample of scores. Letâs take a closer look at what this means. What Is a Frequency Distribution? A frequency can be defined as how often something happens. For example, the number of dogs that people own in a neighborhood is a frequency.A distribution refers to the pattern of these frequencies.A frequency distribution looks at how frequently certain things happen within a sample of values. In our example above, you might do a survey of your neighborhood to see how many dogs each household owns. A frequency distribution is commonly used to categorize information so that it can be interpreted in a visual way. Letâs say you obtain the following set of scores from your sample: 1, 0, 1, 4, 1, 2, 0, 3, 0 2, 1, 1, 2, 0, 1, 1, 3 The first step in turning this into a frequency distribution is to create a table. Label one column the items you are counting, in this case, the number of dogs in households in your neighborhood. Next, create a column where you can tally the responses. Place a line for each instance the number occurs. Finally, total your tallies and add the final number to a third column. Number of Dogs in Household Tally Frequency 0 |||| 4 1 ||||| || 7 2 ||| 3 3 || 2 4 or more | 1 Using a frequency distribution, you can look for patterns in the data. Looking at the table above you can quickly see that out of the 17 households surveyed, 7 families had one dog while 4 families did not have a dog. Another Example of a Frequency Distribution For example, letâs suppose that you are collecting data on how many hours of sleep college students get each night. After conducting a survey of 30 of your classmates, you are left with the following set of scores: 7, 5, 8, 9, 4, 10, 7, 9, 9, 6, 5, 11, 6, 5, 9, 9, 8, 6, 9, 7, 9, 8, 4, 7, 8, 7, 6, 10, 4, 8 In order to make sense of this information, you need to find a way to organize the data. In our example above, the number of hours each week serves as the categories and the occurrences of each number are then tallied. The above information could be presented in a table: Hours of Sleep Tally Frequency 4 ||| 3 5 ||| 3 6 |||| 4 7 ||||| 5 8 ||||| 5 9 ||||| | 7 10 || 2 11 | 1 Looking at the table, you can quickly see that 7 people reported sleeping for 9 hours while only 3 people reported sleeping for 4 hours. How Are Frequency Distributions Displayed? Using the information from a frequency distribution, researchers can then calculate the mean, median, mode, range and standard deviation. Frequency distributions are often displayed in a table format, but they can also be presented graphically using a histogram. A Word From Verywell Frequency distributions are a helpful way of presenting complex data. In psychology research, a frequency distribution might be utilized to take a closer look at the meaning behind numbers. For example, imagine that a psychologist was interested in looking at how test anxiety impacted grades. Rather than simply looking at a huge number of test scores, the researcher might compile the data into a frequency distribution which can then be easily converted into a bar graph. By doing this, the researcher can then quickly look at important things such as the range of scores as well as which scores occurred the most and least frequently.

Medieval Women Essay - 1034 Words
Medieval Women The roles of women in early Anglo-Saxon culture were strictly defined. Women were viewed as possessions and served the function of the peace-weaver. In this role women were married off to warring tribes to promote peace and were to perform duties such as passing the cup from warrior to warrior during ceremonial functions. Women in Anglo-Saxon culture possessed virtually no autonomy and consequently were consistently at the mercy of their lords or husbands. The sense of isolation and desperation felt by these women is captured in the ââ¬Å"The Wifeââ¬â¢s Lamentâ⬠as the speaker describes her inability to control her own situation. The female characters Wealhtheow, Hildeburh, and Freawaru in Beowulf also display the limitedâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Hildeburh is a Danish princess who was married off to Finn, king of the Jutes. Hildeburh is torn away from her loved ones and forced to witness her son and brother killed during a battle between the Danes and the Jutes . Hildeburh has absolutely no say in the marriage (as was the custom) and cannot do nothing to prevent the tragedy. The scop in Beowulf describes how Hildeburh mourned the loss of her relatives as she watched ââ¬Å"fire [swallow] themââ¬âgreediest of spiritsââ¬âall of those whom war had taken away from both peoplesâ⬠(21). In the case of Freawaru, Beouwulf prophesizes that Hrothgarââ¬â¢s daughter will marry the son of Froda in an attempt to create peace but says, ââ¬Å"Most often after the fall of a prince in any nation the deadly spear rests but a little while, even thought the bride is goodâ⬠(35). The implication here is that another marriage based on peace-weaving will create hardship and war. Wealhtheow of Beowulf is another example of a woman who lacks power in her role as a peace-weaver. Wealhtheow is the queen and wife to Hrothgar, so she is considered to be a noblewoman. Accordingly, her role in the kingdom is ceremonial, bit though distinguished, is lacking any real consequence. Wealhtheow greets Beowulf and warriors and in the hall and offers up the mead-bowl with the help of her fellow women. Analysis Of Creon s The King Of Oedipus - 941 Words
Writerââ¬â¢s Response The Jainist text and Mengzi both agree to Creonââ¬â¢s accountability in the playââ¬â¢s CONFLICT, they disagree as to what leads to Creonââ¬â¢s downfall. Mengzi believes Creonââ¬â¢s lack of compassion is why he fails to hold on to everything that ultimately becomes nothing towards the end of the play, whereas The Jainist text believes Creonââ¬â¢s countless hamartia(s) is his downfall throughout the entirety of the play. In the very beginning of the play when both brothers, Eteocles and Polynices, are dead, Creon says that anyone who tries to bury Polynices will not do so unharmed. He does not care that Polynices was the son of Oedipus, a brother, or even a person; Creon only saw Polynices as a traitor and Antigone as a traitor as well for trying to give her brother a proper burial. Creon never got off of his high horse to ever put himself in Antigoneââ¬â¢s position as a person with a sibling. If it were him that had died doing what he thought was right, he would want someone like Antigone sticking up for him or maybe he would cower away and not take action because of the suspending consequences, like Ismene. Mengzi says that ââ¬Å"human sensitivity to the suffering of others should lead to a life of benevolence, duty, and wisdomâ⬠(706). This is why good communications skills with the childââ¬â¢s parents is key as you know whatââ¬â¢s happening and therefore you maybe can see why the child is behaving in a certain manner. ââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬â- ââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬â- Inappropriate language, taking about private parts, this should be looked into further with the childââ¬â¢s parents. ââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬â ââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬â ââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬â- Violence, Kicking, punching, ââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬â- ââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬â- Verbal abuse, swearing etc.. ââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬â- ââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬â- All these above should be talked through with the parents firstly, unless the child has explained that this behaviour is because of sexual abuse for example then this should be referred to social services for them to investigate. Grace encouraged the relationship and on learning that she and her husband would be moving to the East Coast, set in motion plans for Norma Jeane to marry Dougherty on June 19, 1942. Dougherty joined the Merchant Marines in 1943 and in 1944 was sent overseas. Norma Jeane, while working in a factory inspecting parachutes in 1944, was photographed by the Army as a promotion to show women on the assembly line contributing to the war effort. One of the photographers, David Conover, asked to take further pictures of her. By spring of 1945, she was quickly becoming known as a "photographers dream" and had appeared on 33 covers of national magazines. She was a public icon nearly the whole time she was a star, she later died from an overdose. There was suspicion that the government may have killed her because of her possibly having an affair with JFK. Many questions remain unanswered to this day.

Free Essays on Sisterhood
Building lasting relationships is one of the most important aspects of life. It not only affects a personââ¬â¢s social life, but their personal life as well. The stronger the bond is, the more it influences their daily life and habits. While many relations have positive effects, there are just as many that negatively affect someone. The people, whom one builds these bonds with, may vary greatly from their grandparents and cousins to their teachers and classmates. Out of the many possible relationships one builds, the most powerful one is sisterhood. It is a sacred friendship between young women, who greatly love each other, which positively affects them even though opposing situations may arise. The power of sisterhood binds girls together with their immense amount of love for each other. Although they tend to fight tremendously, sisters will realize that their yells and tears simply came out of love and will eventually make up. On the other hand, some sisters will quickly apologize knowing that it is the only way for them to receive what they want from the other sister. Sisterhood is also about sharing oneââ¬â¢s moods and feelings, whether they are good or bad. If the feelings are good, a sister will openly share the otherââ¬â¢s excitement, and if down, the sisters help them through it and even lend them a shoulder to lean on. 5 Instances When Interracial Dating Is a Problem
5 Instances When Interracial Dating Is a Problem Interracial dating isnt without its problems, but today interracial relationships enjoy more support in the United States than they have at any point in history. While two decades ago, fewer than half of Americans approved of interracial marriage, now 65 percent of all Americans support such relationships, and 85 percent of young people do. Attitudes toward interracial marriage are so progressive that some people prefer to exclusively date interracially. But are they doing so for the wrong reasons? There are a number of reasons not to date interracially, including for social status, because itââ¬â¢s trendy or to remedy a rocky love life. Dating interracially with misguided motives will inevitably lead to problems. To End the Losing Streak in Your Love Life Youââ¬â¢ve dated a long line of losers- deadbeats, cheaters, manipulators. They all belonged to your racial group, so you figure youââ¬â¢ll have better luck dating someone of a different race. Thatââ¬â¢s because deadbeats, cheaters and manipulators only come in one color, right? If only things were that simple. The reality is that youââ¬â¢ll have to do much more than land a love interest with a different skin tone from yours to end destructive dating patterns. The answer to your romance problems isnââ¬â¢t crossing the color line but examining why youââ¬â¢re drawn to inappropriate partners. To Gain Status The idea of dating interracially to gain social status may seem peculiar. After all, interracial couples face discrimination that may lead to distinct disadvantages. Because the United States remains racially stratified, however, itââ¬â¢s considered advantageous for members of oppressed groups to pair up with those of more powerful groups. From the Antebellum Era on, such partnerships have allowed people of color to gain access to a quality of life that likely wouldââ¬â¢ve eluded them otherwise. Although today racial minorities can largely succeed in society on their own, some elite people of color may feel the need to score a spouse from another race to boost their image or better fit into the corporate landscape. As noted in the short story collection You Are Free, ââ¬Å"The world out there insisted as soon as a black man made it, he should marry a white woman. As soon as a black woman made it, she should marry a white man.â⬠No one should date interracially due to external pressures. If Barack Obama won his presidential campaign with a black woman at his side, itââ¬â¢s certainly not necessary for, say, a businessman to date interracially for the purpose of upward mobility. In an ideal world, people wouldnââ¬â¢t enter romantic relationships for what they stand to gain from their partners. This isnââ¬â¢t to say that every successful minority who dates or marries interracially does so with ulterior motives. But just as some high-powered men pursue trophy wives, some members of minority groups pursue mates from the dominant culture for status. Everyone Else Doing It Wherever you look, you see interracial couples. Your friends, colleagues and relatives are all dating interracially or have in the past. Given this, you decide to take the plunge as well. After all, you donââ¬â¢t want to be the odd one out or, even worse, the boring one. Soon, youââ¬â¢re visiting interracial dating websites, and prospective dates from a variety of racial groups lie at your fingertips. Why isnââ¬â¢t this a wise move? The race of your date shouldnââ¬â¢t be the main draw for you nor should your dating patterns be influenced by whatââ¬â¢s trendy now. The common interests and chemistry you have with a person should be the driving force for your decision to pursue a relationship. Interracial couples face real challenges. The person who becomes part of such pair because itââ¬â¢s hip or trendy wonââ¬â¢t be prepared to deal with them. Rebellion Many parents tell children outright which racial groups they approve of them dating and which racial groups they forbid them to date. Actress Diane Farr is a case in point. Now married to a Korean-American man, Farr had been told growing up that her boyfriends could only be German, Irish, French or Jewish. No blacks and no Puerto Ricans, though, or you are out of my house, Farr recalled her mother saying. Farr did go on to date black and Puerto Rican men, however, and her parents came around. Farr defied her parentsââ¬â¢ dating rules because she formed genuine connections with men from minority backgrounds. Some people, in contrast, flout their parentsââ¬â¢ wishes simply to rebel. No child should feel pressured to go along with their parentsââ¬â¢ racist beliefs. At the same time, itââ¬â¢s irresponsible to seek out partners you know your parents would disapprove of just to rebel against them. The mates you seek out certainly wonââ¬â¢t appreciate being used as fodder in the war with your parents. If you disagree with your parentsââ¬â¢ views on race, challenge them directly by broaching discussions about the issue with them. And if you and your parents have other problems, donââ¬â¢t try to hurt them by dating interracially. Youââ¬â¢ll only end up hurting your date and yourself for behaving so insensitively. You Feel Inferior Itââ¬â¢s no secret that society fosters a sense of inferiority in certain racial groups. This leads some members of minority groups to experience self-hatred. Such people are not only ashamed of their culture but of the physical features they have that reflect that culture. If they could erase every trait that singles them out as belonging to their minority group, they would. Since thatââ¬â¢s impossible, they settle for seemingly second best- coupling up with someone from a different race to make them feel better about themselves or to produce children without their telltale ethnic features. A person this insecure is unlikely to make a good partner. As the old saying goes, you canââ¬â¢t love someone until you love yourself. Rather than dating across ethnic lines for validation, such people need to learn how to feel better about who they are. Seeking therapy, reading up on their cultural background and surrounding themselves with positive images related to their ethnic group may help.

Walkable Streets; Good City Forms Annotated Bibliography Essay
Walkable Streets; Good City Forms Annotated Bibliography - Essay Example It even states that if transport policy makers start considering walking as a major transport mode, they can create policies that can promote the act of walking. Joe Cortright in his research named ââ¬Å"Walking the Walk: How Walkability Raises Home Values in US Citiesâ⬠states that the level of walkability of a particular city have various advantages and the main advantage is increase in value of homes (Cortright 2). He states that homes that are situated in areas that score high in walkability and have retail stores and shopping outlets located near to them are up for sale at very high prices as compared to those homes that are located in areas that score low on walkability. In his research he uses the method of Walk Score algorithm to determine the price of a particular home in relation to the locationââ¬â¢s walkability. Ray Tomalty in his research named ââ¬Å"BC Sprawl Report: Walkability and Healthâ⬠tried to figure out the impact of design of neighborhood on the trends of walking and bicycling in the region of BC and the overall impact of activities of walking and biking on the health of the members of the BC society (Tomalty x). Through their research they figured out that there was a connection between an individualââ¬â¢s behavior, issue of obesity and stress and the level of walkability and the act of walking. They even figured out that if the degree of walkability of a particular area is increased through programs, the amount of walking activity even increases. Analysis.Corporate Sustainability - Case Study Example In case of initiatives such as organizational change, a stakeholder can be regarded as any individual whose support, participation of decision might have an influence on the outcome of that initiative. In short any person who influences an organization and gets influenced by any change in the organization can be referred to as a stakeholder. In Case of UPS, the major stakeholders will be customers, competitors, government and suppliers. With the change in the definition, the stakeholderââ¬â¢s expectations and their overall influence have also changed. In the presence business environment, the power as well as influence of the stakeholders has increased. The customers have become more educated, quality oriented as well as more demanding. As more and more products and services are being launched, customer loyalty is decreasing. Today, customers look for more options such as discounts, freebies, customer services etc. Apart from this, the government scenario has also changed. Since U PS is a transport and logistics organization and is involved in local and international travelling, government intervention is regular and the company has to go through many check points. Others government regulations such as licensing, security, etc have become more stringent, which means that the organization needs to be more transparent in its operations. Book Report On Rebecca Essay -- essays research papers
NOVEL STUDY Section A - Background Information 1) In 1907, a popular writer named Daphne Du Maurier was born. She wrote her first novel, Loving Spirit, in 1931. Other novels that Du Maurier wrote were Rule Britannia, My Cousin Rachel, The Kingââ¬â¢s General. The Scapegoat, Jamaican Inn and many more. Margaret Forester held high praises for Du Maurier. Forester had said, "No other popular writer {Du Maurier} has so triumphantly defied classificationâ⬠¦ She satisfied all t questionable criteria of popular fiction, and yet satisfied too, the exact requirements of "real literature", something very few novelist do." Daphne Du Maurier died in 1985, at the age of 82. Her novel Rebecca is now considered to be a modern classic. 2) I chose this novel because I had heard wonderful things about it. Someone recommended this novel to me and when I read the back, I could not help myself. The summary on the back made the novel seem so intriguing. The cover design caused a mysterious affect. On the cover is a single house. The sky is very dark and gloomy, but then lightens up near the back of the house. The lonesome houses and dark sky made me wonder about all the mysteries and secrets that waited to be unlocked. The title Rebecca is also quite mysterious because the title is a single word. In no way does it make reference to what may happen. The novel makes me think that I should "expect the unexpected" Section B - Setting and Plot 1) The setting of Rebecca takes place in Maxims ancient family home. This enormous mansion was called Manderely. Manderely was very well known throughout most of Europe, which was where the novel takes place. The author doesnââ¬â¢t specify where in Europe Rebecca takes place. Du Maurier stated that Manderely was driving distance from London, England. Manderely was far away from town. The mansion had beautiful gardens all around it. There were pathways through the forest that lead to Manderelyââ¬â¢s private beach. There were iron gates that opened up to the long twisted driveway. The beginning of the driveway was surrounded by tress and shrubs. Then the shrubs disappeared to reveal blood red rhododendrons, that East wing and a West wing. The east wing had a morning room, which was where the characters sat after breakfast, an ante room, a library and a large double bedroom. The double bedroom overlooked Manderelyââ¬â¢s beautif... ...ted the real name of Mrs. de Winter. Also, the author rambled sometimes. I felt the novel dragged on and it was longer that it needed to be. Some of the authorââ¬â¢s descriptions were too long and pointless. I would recommend this novel to anyone because it is very well written. Out of ten, Iââ¬â¢d give Rebecca nine. Section H - Compare with Movie There was a movie version of Rebecca. I found the movie to be quite similar but there were some parts that were different. For example, the part of the dress ball was very different. In the novel, Mrs. de Winter had a dress made not realizing it was the same one Rebecca wore. When Maxim sent her upstairs to change. Maximââ¬â¢s sister comforted her. However, in the movie, Mrs. de Winter went upstairs and had an argument with Mrs. Danvers, the maid who had set her up. Also, in the novel there was a fight between Mrs. de Winter and Mrs. Danvers when they were in the west wing. This fight never occurred in the movie. The ending of the movie was, also, very different. In the novel Maxim and Mrs. de Winter go back to the Manderly to see that it was on fire in the movie Maxim and Mrs. de Winter move far away so they can start off fresh together.

Influence from Mexican and Puerto Ricans in the Us Culture Essay
The U. S. culture has been saturated with Mexican and Puerto Rican influences. Influence is defined as a cognitive factor that tends to have an effect on what you do. I believe most of the influences are good but there are also some that are bad. The two major influences that will be brought up would be the influence of human creativity and violence. Puerto Ricans had a unique blend of human creativity. ââ¬Å"Fueled by that political awakening, a cultural renaissance emerged among Puerto Rican artists. â⬠By the 1960ââ¬â¢s salsa music began to emerge. Puerto Ricans rooted this category of music especially in the New York area. Fania Records became the dominant record label in the early salsa music scene. Juan Gonzalez mentioned artist such as Eddie and Charlie Palmieri, Willie Colon and Ray Barretto. They provoked with there politically charged lyrics. It also sprang up writers such as Piri Thomas and Nicholasa Mohr mentioned by Juan Gonzalez. Piri Thomas was born in the Spanish Harlem section of Manhattan and is known for his best seller autobiography ââ¬Å"Down These Mean Streetsâ⬠pg63 and describes his struggle having Puerto Rican heritage. Nicholasa Mohr her works also told of the difficulties of growing up in Puerto Rican communities in the New York area. As more Puerto Rican came to into the States a big clash of racial identity rose. Black and White was a struggle in itself then Brown came in to the mix it mad things twist. ââ¬Å"A dwindling tax base, brought about by the flight of industry and skilled white workers to the suburbs, massive disinvestment by government in public schools and infrastructure, and the epidemics of drug and alcohol abuse, all tore at the quality of city lifeâ⬠Pg 64. Lack of investment in the infrastructure and public schools by the government was a major contributor to this especially since most did not know how to speak English and the teachers did not know how to translate to the students. ââ¬Å"The third generation of Puerto Ricans, those who came of age in the late 1980s and early 1990s, found themselves crippled by inferior schools, a lack of jobs, and underfunded social services. They found their neighborhoods inundated with drugs and violence. They grew up devoid, for the most part, of self-image, national identity, or cultural awareness. They became the lost generation. â⬠Pg63 Mexicans also had there share of influencial human creativity. Mexicans are known for developing corrido music. They were smart about this music though because they were used to inform. They had dates names warnings and some were stories of crime or love. â⬠The average corrido was usually so filled with dates, names, and factual details that it functioned not only as entertainment but also as a news report, historical narrative, and commentary for the mass of Mexicans who were still illiterateâ⬠. pg124. To change up the creativity from the arts to a more meaningful influence would be the founding of MAYO and no not the one you eat but Mexican American Youth Organization. This was intended to protect the civil rights of Mexican Americans. ââ¬Å"One of the most influential groups to arise during the period was the Mexican American Youth Organization (MAYO), founded in San Antonio by Willie Velazquez, a young community organizer for the Catholic Bishopââ¬â¢s Committee on the Spanish Speaking, and Crystal Cityââ¬â¢s Jose Angel Gutierrez. â⬠pg 69. Mexicans have been picked on for decades and are still being hated upon. What was heavily impacted were schools and nothing was done about it. MAYO staged school walk outs to gain power. These acts would allow them to earn seats on school boards which in turn allowed them to participate in deciding what was best for their own people. In turn violence also was majorly influence. The US culture was raised to hate Mexicans. â⬠Once the Great Depression hit and unemployment surged among whites, though, not even Mexicans who spoke fluent English escaped the anti-immigrant hysteria. More than 500,000 were forcibly deported during the 1930s, among them many who were U. S. citizens. â⬠Speaking spanish a lot of times was a burden for mexicans which made them targets since most that all they spoke. To conclude Puerto Ricans and Mexicans have influenced the US culture. It still hasnââ¬â¢t stopped it continues to. More than likely it will still influence for many more years to come. They have been put down but they come right back up and stronger. They have given a lot to stop and to soak in many years of heritage. So go dance to some salsa or sing a corrido for a change.

The Multiple Perspectives Of Adolf Hitler Essay - 2056 Words
The Multiple Perspectives of Adolf Hitler. History has had many evil characters, but Adolf Hitler, the leader of Nazi Germany, is considered to have been the most inhumane, dangerous, and deadliest of all. He made the persecution of Jews official government policy. His wishes led to millions of death. Many people were responsible for the Holocaust, which millions of Jews and others were murdered. As stated in the book Adolf Hitler, Study in Hate, No person bears as much guilt as Adolf Hitler (Roberts 2011). He rose to power by preaching hate violence, and murder as well as winning support by lying and encouraging prejudice. He promoted Pan-Germanism, anti-Semitism, and anticommunism with charismatic oratory and Nazi propaganda. He become a dictator from 1934 to 1945, during World War II, and led to eleven million peoples been killed, and six million of them are Jews. Evil Laws Comparative Essay on ââ¬Å¡Ãâúthe Crucibleââ¬Å¡Ãâù
Evil is the force in nature that governs and gives rise to wickedness and the sin that harms even the holiest of people. In ââ¬Å"The Crucibleâ⬠by Arthur Miller, the nature of evil is revealed through the corruption of reverend Parris which ultimately leads to devastation of society and reverend Hales good intentions. During 1692 in Salem, Massachusetts, the witch trials begin as girls who were caught dancing in the forest pretend that they are under the influence of the devil. When the court is introduced in Salem many innocent people get accused of witchcraft so that the accusers can simply satisfy their own desires. Although both Parris and Hale are spiritual leaders, Hale shows integrity as he sticks for what his goal is, whereas Parrisâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦I dare not step outside at nightâ⬠(128). Here, even when Parris is almost killed due to his lack of integrity, he still does not admit that the girls are lying. Furthermore, this occurs after Abigail stea ls his money, but he never admits that it is his fault, proving his lack of integrity. On the other hand, both Parris and Hale might be spiritual leaders but Hale shows he is heroic as he attempts to fulfill his obligations. Throughout the play Hale shows integrity because he is looking to find justice in the court no matter what it takes. During the courts discussion ââ¬Å"in all justice, sir, a claim so weighty cannot be argued by a farmer. In Godââ¬â¢s name, sir, stop here; send him home and let him come again with a lawyerâ⬠(99). Here Hale shows integrity because he is standing up for what he believes is correct; justice. Hale wants John Proctor to go back home and get a lawyer for the court so that he has a fair chance to save his wife. Furthermore, by the end of the play Hale tries one more time to create justice in Salem as he is talking to Danforth ââ¬Å"There is blood on my head! Can you not see the blood on my head!!â⬠(131). Here Hale is experiencing heavy guilt because before he had signed many peoples death warrant and now he has realized that there was never any witchcraft in Salem. In addition, Hale shows integrity as he tries to fix what he has done wrong. Therefore, reverend Parris is too corrupt to admit his evil actions that destroys Salem while reverend Hale

New Recession Worry Bank Fails Free Essays
The article ââ¬Å"New Recession Worry: Bank Failsâ⬠by Chris Isidore discusses construction loan problems and negative effects they have on performance of smaller and mid-size banks. The economic impact of loan problem is evident ââ¬â economic analysts assume that they may result in serious credit crunch. Therefore, the overall financial system is being endangered by instability and possible financial loses. We will write a custom essay sample on New Recession Worry: Bank Fails or any similar topic only for you Order Now à Isidore, the author of the article, stresses that there is a need to fight strong headwinds as the risk of capital shortfalls is rising. If not managed, the situation will definitely lead to failure of national banks. The Federal Deposit Insurance Group reports that the number of problem institutions has jumped after the loan crisis of 1980s. More than 75 banks are experiencing serious troubles. During the regular hearing on the state of the baking industry, it was reported that the mentioned 76 banks were likely to be a smaller part of the overall problem which inflicts banking sector. Many banks are really worrying about their financial stability as there is a real chance to go bankrupt. If within the next two years the number of problem institution raises up to 200, the flood of banks will lead to SL crisis. For example, the years of 1989 was marked by a failure of more than 200 banks. (Isidore 2008) Jaret Seiberg, financial services analyst, argues that troubled banks should be purchased before they go bankrupt. He says: ââ¬Å"Many of these banks are highly dependent on construction lending, and thatââ¬â¢s the area of lending that is likely to come under the most stressâ⬠. (Isidore 2008) The positive moment is that experts argue that not all banks will fail. For example, in 2007 only 3 banks failed, despite about 50 banks were listed to fail at the end of the previous year. Only Douglass National Bank in Kansas City has failed this year. Nevertheless, the problem exists and the head of the FDIC decided to hire 25 staffers to deal with increase in bank failures. In such a way, the staff will be increased by 11% improving performance. The idea is to hire retirees who have managed to deal the S;L crisis. Of course, smaller banks are at higher risk to fail, not the global ones. Isidore says that smaller banks are ââ¬Å"big players in the business of construction loans made to homebuilders ââ¬â loans that were backed by new homes now worth a fraction of the original estimated valueâ⬠. (Isidore 2008) Economic experts admit that the number of construction loans has spiked. For example, in the past six months 7.5% of single-family construction loans were violated. I agree with the author that small and mid-size banks are the most endangered as they have less opportunities to cope with financial crisis and they need more time to restore their current positions. Moreover, credible reputation will be under the question. I think that even non-residential developers, who seem not to be hurt, may suffer from loan problems. à Isidore also supports this idea writing that ââ¬Å"the demise of smaller lenders probably wonââ¬â¢t have as noticeable impact on the national level, but in a lot of local markets around the U.S. it will be feltâ⬠. (Isidore 2008) Further, I want to add that smaller banks are also marked by the greatest economic weakness and they are more likely to fail, but the customers have the chance to save their deposits. I would recommend developing better security policies in case of financial and economic crisis. Smaller banks should be more careful in providing new loans and credit as they may loose money in case of credit crunch or new loan problems. Works Cited Isidore, Chris. 2008, March 3. Reason of Export and Import in Countries
Question: Discuss about the Senario for Reason of Export and Import in Countries. Answer: Introduction International trade can be defined as the exchange of products and services across the countries for the economic growth and development of the nations. International trade facilitates in the development of global economy and obtaining a control over the supply and demand of products and services. Trading activities are essential for uniform distribution of natural resources, climatic conditions and technologies across the world. International trade includes importing and exporting of products and services across national territories (Introduction to International Trade, 2010). In this context, the present essay is about gaining an in-depth understanding of the reason for countries involved in import and export activities. Reason for Import and Export in Countries Countries around the world mainly import the products and services that are not domestically produced and are necessary for the development of another commodity. Importing can be described as purchase of foreign goods and services in the domestic market of buyers The main benefit realised by the countries through importing is achieving economies of scale. Economies of scale is achieved through gaining cost advantage by importing products and services that are available at a relatively lower cost in other country as compared to its domestic price. For example, labour cost is comparatively less in Australia as compared to other developed countries (The benefits, challenges and opportunities of importing, 2013). The procurement of lower priced products and services increases the profitability of the industries in a nation thus enhancing its economic growth and development. Importing also facilitates nations to achieve competitive advantage through gaining access to unique products and s ervices that were not available within their territory (Cavusgil et al., 2014). Import activities of a nation also lead to the increase in quality of domestic products as they have to compete with the imported goods. Thus, domestic producers of a nation have their efficiency in order to compete with the quality of products and services imported from overseas. Import of goods and services relatively unavailable domestically becomes compulsory for the nations that may be required for the production of another commodity. There are specific advantages available in a particular country such as presence of skilled workers and advanced technologies that may be in deficit within other countries (Seyoum, 2009). There is wide availability of natural resources such as fossil fuels, timber, fertile soil and minerals in some countries that may be required by foreign nations in production of certain goods and services. Similarly, some countries have highly developed infrastructures that enable them in the production of complex goods and services (Cavusgil et al., 2014). On the other hand, exporting involves sale of goods and services by a nation to a foreign nation for income generation. The goods and services that have high demand in the foreign nations are generally exported by the domestic country to earn profits (Cavusgil et al., 2014). The main advantage achieved by nations through exporting activities is inflow of foreign currency helping them to achieve economic stability. Export helps the nations to get rid of the excess production of certain goods and services that may not be available in other countries and thus achieving profitability. High exports by a country results in creation of more employment opportunities for the domestic economy. For example, it is estimated that about 4.926 million people are employed in the United States on account of exporting activities (Langenfeld and Nieberding, 2005). Countries are involved in exporting and importing activities mainly to gain access to the global market. It helps the nations to trade globally and gain an exposure of the various opportunities present in the foreign locations that may help them to grow economically. Imports and exports carried out by a country are accounted in its current account in the balance of payments (Dridi and Zieschang, 2002). The international trading facilitates nations to gain access to the best possible products and services worldwide at the best possible cost (Shenkar and Luo, 2008). Global trading has ensured the availability of every type of product or service in the international market such as food, cloth, oil, jewellery and many others. The main services that are traded globally include transportation, skilled manpower, banking and many others. International trade is also very beneficial to maintain price stability of products and services by exporting surplus products and importing them in case of deficiency. Thus, exporting and importing activities lead to reduction in operational risk for business entities as they gain easily gain access to product and service from the international market required by them (Trent et al., 2009). Export and import activities also provide encouragement to global economies for gain access to the opportunity of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). Foreign Direct Investment can be stated as the amount of money invested by a country in the business procedures of another country through acquiring stake or complete ownership. FDI can be regarded as the way through which foreign expertise and currencies can gain entry in the domestic market of a country sustaining its economic growth and development (Buthe and Milner, 2008). FDI provides competitive advantage to a country by enhancing its gross domestic product through raising employment level. FDI encourages growth and expansion of companies enhancing their profitability and thus increased revenue generation for the domestic country (OECD, 2009). Developing countries lacking the presence of any resource can always have a comparative advantage of gaining access to the deficit resource through trading with advanced economies. In this context, the law of comparative advantage states that even countries producing goods and services efficiently can benefit from getting involved in trading activities. This is achieved through maximising the wealth of a nation by diversifying its resources in most competitive industries (McDonald, 2012). Countries can heavily benefit from the diversification achieved through export and import of products and services. The large dependence of a country on few resources makes it more susceptible to market forces such as recession, introduction of new trade laws and technologies. The decline in the demand of a product and service on which a country is largely dependent will negatively impact its economic growth. Thus, international trading helps in the development of a diversified economy that will hel p in ensuring that downturn of some industries would be balanced by the growth and development of other competitive industries (Meja, 2011). The import and export of goods and services also helps the countries worldwide to gain knowledge of the cultural values and beliefs of the foreign nations. This helps them to produce the goods and services in accordance with the taste and preferences of people. Thus, exporting countries involved in manufacturing of goods and services can gain advantage through obtaining knowledge of the global cultural diversity (Mac-Dermott and Mornah, 2014). Import and export activities are also essential to be carried out by the nations for eliminating monopoly that restrict wealthy nations to establish their monopoly in the market. Also, global trading facilitates countries to develop cordial relations with foreign countries that can help them to gain access to better educational opportunities and achieve international peace. International trade of goods and services through export and import also help nations worldwide to raise the living standards of people. The increased availability of resour ces enhances the productivity resulting in increase in per capital income leading to economic prosperity (Coats and Brady, 2015). International trading has also helped in the globalisation of economies by connecting different countries across the borders. Multinational companies of a country enjoys numerous benefits from the globalization process as they can gain access to better quality products and services from the developing countries at reasonable prices (Mac-Dermott and Mornah, 2014). Large corporations can take advantage of lower cost of labour and operational costs in the developing economies thus enhancing their productivity and profitability (Shenkar and Luo, 2008). The benefits realised by the nations through export and import of goods and services has been evaluated and examined by international trade theories such as classical trade theory, factor proportion theory and product lifecycle theory. Classical theory states that extent of international trade in a country are related to its trading pattern with other countries. The theory states that countries are only able to gain economic advantage by trading from other country only if both are actively involved in sharing of resources with each other (Dimand, 2004). The theory mainly emphasises that international trading activities involves production of goods and services by a nation having a competitive advantage over them and thereafter exporting of surplus products. Thus, as per classical theory economic advantage or disadvantage of a country mainly refers to the differences in factors such as resources, labour, capital or technology (Dimand, 2004). On the other hand, factor proportion theory emphasises on the presence of difference in economic advantages exhibited by the trading nations. As per the theory, countries across the world are continuously involved in the production and export of goods and services for which they have wide availability of production factors (Kjeldsen-Kragh, 2002). They import generally the goods and services requiring large amount of production factors that are in deficiency in the domestic market. Thus, the theory extended the concept of economic advantage by emphasising on factors of production (Kjeldsen-Kragh, 2002). Product life cycle theory also focused on explaining the patterns of international trade and expansion of multinational firms through global trade. The theory stated that trade cycle of a product and service initiates from its production by the domestic firm, then by a foreign firm and at last anywhere around the world offering best possible cost advantage. It also take into account th e reason for export of surplus products and services by a country and then after its import in case of deficiency. Product life cycle theory was mainly based on emphasising the concept of technological innovation and market expansion for determining the international trade patterns. This is because technology innovation results in the development of high quality products and services and market size helps in determining the extent of trading activities (Bhat, 2010). Countries around the world try to indulge more in exporting activities in comparison to import activities. This is because exporting leads to increased revenue generation for the countries. Nations involved in import although gain access to better resources for production of goods and services but it ultimately leads to income deficit in a country. The excess of import activities in a country in comparison to export activities means that more money is going to that gained through exporting. The country involved more in exporting activities as compared to that of importing have more economic prosperity as it leads to creation of more employment options, production and enhanced profit margins (Capela, 2011). The gross domestic product (GDP) of a country increases through enhanced exporting activities thereby making a nation wealthier. However, the countries involved in international trade activities have to also face trade barriers that hinder the free trade activities across the natio ns. Tariff, a special type of tax is imposed on goods and services exported and imported from a country. These types of barriers often restrict the international trade activities and most seriously impact the economic development of developing countries. In this context, World Trade Organisation (WTO) facilitates and promotes free trade activities in all areas of commerce including tariffs and subsidies (McDonald, 2012). Conclusion Thus, it can be stated from the discussion held in the above essay that nations are involved in export and import of goods and services for their economic growth. The main benefits achieved by the countries through global trading are diversification of risk, achieving competitive advantage and economies of scale. Also, the countries involved in international trade should strive to maintain a balance between their export and import activities. This is necessary so that import activities of a country do not exceed the export activities otherwise money leaving from a country will outweigh the incoming money. References Bhat, M.K. 2010. Great Gatsby Quote Analysis Essays
Great Gatsby Quote Analysis Essays Great Gatsby Quote Analysis Paper Great Gatsby Quote Analysis Paper Triple Entry Notebook -July 4, 2014 F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby. Chapters 1-2. 1 . In my younger and more vulnerable years my father gave me some advice that Ive been turning over in my mind ever since. Whenever you feel like criticizing any one, he told me, Just remember that all the people in this world havent had the advantages that youve had. (1) 2. And so with the sunshine and the great bursts of leaves growing on the trees, Just as things grow in fast movies, I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning ever again with the summer. 12) 3. Well, these books are all scientific, Insisted Tom, glancing at her Impatiently. This fellow has worked out the whole thing. Its up to us, who are the dominant race, to watch out or these other races will take control of things. (20) : 1. This quote begins near the start of the novel. Nicks father tells Nick that before he judges anyone he should keep in mind that not everyone has had as many advantages as he had. What this means is that Nick should be empathetic to others and consider their upbringing before chastising them. Nick says that his fathers advice has been in his head wrought his entire life since he first heard it. This makes me think that Nick swears by this advice and carefully adheres to it throughout his life. I want to know more about Nick and If he really does follow this advice because it seems like a very hard quote to stand by. 2. This quote Just makes me want to know even more about Nick than before. The quote makes me think that perhaps this summer is Nicks chance to be successful at something and that he wants to change something about his life. It is also telling us that the novel will be set (or at least start) in summer. The time this book was set in as the roaring twenties and the most exciting things happen in summer such as parties and going outside. This makes me think that the book will be very exciting and enjoyable to read. I can really picture the setting that Fitzgerald is setting because of the exciting, vivid imagery (And so with the sunshine and the great bursts of leaves growing In the trees ). 3. My pollen of Tom Is already very poor because of this quote. After reading this quote my mental Image of Tom is an Ignorant, arrogant, and racist man. He seems like a pseudo-intellectual and tries to sound smart by Insisting that his pollen on there races is well founded by scientific books. I feel like he already felt that he was books simply provide assurance and gives him an excuse to think this way. I think that Tom will be one of the significant characters in this narrative because hes rich, powerful and lives close the main character, Nick. His arrogance will probably lead to conflicts later on. Group Discussion: -Daisy knows that Tom is cheating on her but refuses to acknowledge it because she feels a sense of duty towards him since shes his wife. This is because of societies view on women during this time period, men had more power and women were expected to look after their husband and stay with him through thick and thin. Gatsby is a mysterious character that nobody actually Knows. The only thing people have heard about Gatsby are rumors and it makes the reader want to know even more about Gatsby -Daisy cynically says that she wants her daughter to grow up pretty and dumb Just like her. She says this because in their society the only way for a woman to be rich and live a comfortable life is to be attractive enough to be a rich mans wife or to be born into. -After hearing a few more thoughts on Daisy my opinion of Daisy changed. I still think that she is careless and very materialistic but now she has a good reason to in my mind. There are not a lot of options for women in this setting so I cant really blame her for being the way she is. Triple Entry Notebook -July 7, 2014 Chapters 3-7. 1 . The caterwauling horns had reached a crescendo and I turned away and cut across the lawn toward home. I glanced back once. A wafer of a moon was shining over Gatsby house, making the night fine as before, sudden emptiness seemed to flow now from the windows and the great doors, endowing with complete isolation he figure of the host, who stood on the porch, his hand up in a formal gesture of farewell. (51) 2. I am one of the few honest people that I have ever known (54) 3. The truth was that Jay Gatsby, of West Egg, Long Island, sprang from his Platonic conception of himself. He was a son of God?a phrase which, if it means anything, means Just that?and he must be about His Fathers business, the service of a vast, vulgar, and meretricious beauty. So he invented Just the sort of Jay Gatsby that a seventeen year old boy would be likely to invent, and to this conception he was faithful to the end. (82) 1. This quote, to me, truly illustrates how fake Gatsby life is and how lonely he is. After the exciting and extravagant party Gatsby silently waves good-bye at his guests. He barely participates in his own parties and it seems like he Just throws the parties because he feels like thats what he should be doing with his excess money. Gatsby has these parties every weekend and no one even knows who he is yet. Throughout the party people Just talk about the newest rumor they heard about Gatsby. Gatsby never meets with anyone and actually talks to them. To his party goers hes Just the mysterious guy who throws the party. Putting this all together I think that Gatsby is very lonely because he does not have any friends and probably feels incredibly isolated and lonely inside his gigantic house. 2. Nick is being hypocritical when he says that hes one of the few honest people hes ever met. He is pursuing Jordan while writing love notes to a girl back at his old home. He is basically tricking/lying both of these girls and is anything but honest. Before this I placed a lot of trust in Nick. He seems to be a spectator in this book rather than an actual character. All he does is stand by quietly and make silent observations unless someone talks to him first. After reading Nicks lie I am going to be more careful and stop blindly trusting everything Nick tells us about whats going on in his life. I can relate to what Nick says about everybody thinking they have at least one good virtue to themselves. Nobody is perfect and they know that so they try to find a redeeming quality in themselves. 3. Gatsby has longed for the American dream since he was a teenage boy. He saw that his parents were poor and looked down at them. He did not want to be as poor as they are and so he invents a new name and persona for himself. James Gate is poor and imperfect whereas Jay Gatsby is rich and powerful. Its not uncommon for the average person to dream about being rich and powerful but the fact that Gatsby followed through with his hopes and dreams to the very end is admirable. I understand that he doesnt want to be poor anymore but he should have at least appreciated his parents for raising him to the best of their abilities. -Tom freaking after Daisys affair with Gatsby was unjustified. He was perfectly okay with openly cheating on Daisy with Myrtle but once she cheats on him he becomes distraught and feels that he didnt deserve it. He feels this way because of the way their society has placed man and woman. -Nicks comment about him being one of the few honest people he has ever met is a change. Throughout the novel so far he always puts himself down and is incredibly modest.Ã Is this significant? Does it symbolize a change in Nicks character or has he always Just felt this way? -The scene where Nick describes Gatsby amazing smile tells us that Gatsby appears a very charismatic man. Even though Nick says Gatsby has one of the most genuine smiles hes ever seen I still doubt that Gatsby was actually smiling. I think that he smiles the way rich people will smile Just like how he throws parties the way he thinks rich people throw them. Triple Entry Notebook July 8, 2014 Chapters 8-9. 1 . Theyre a rotten crowd, I shouted across the lawn. Youre worth the whole damn bunch put together. Ive always been glad I said that. It was the only compliment I ever gave him, because I disapproved of him from beginning to end. First he nodded politely, and then his face broke into that radiant and understanding smile, as if wed been in ecstatic cahoots on that fact all the time. (124) 2. They were careless people, Tom and Daisy?they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness, or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made. (143) 3. And as I sat there brooding on the old, unknown world, I thought of Gatsby wonder when he first picked out the green light at the end of Daisys dock. He had come a long way to this blue lawn, and his dream must have seemed so close that he could hardly fail to grasp it. He did not know that it was already behind him, nowhere back in that vast obscurity beyond the city, where the dark fields of the republic rolled on under the night. Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgiastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but thats no matter tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther And one fine morning So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past. (144) 1. This is a very strong statement/compliment from Nick. First of all Nick has never given a compliment to Gatsby so it sounds very genuine. Second of all this is the first mime Nick has made an open Judgment after keeping all his thoughts to himself rich that he has lost his innocence and more aware of how the real world is. I think that after reading Nicks experiences he is fully Justified in what he says and the rich (in the story) truly are rotten people and Gatsby is the only redeeming person out of all of them. 2. Tom and Daisy are incredibly inconsiderate and empathetic. They are used to getting what they want all the time and so they have become this way. They create a huge mess and expect other people to handle the cleanup. At this point of the novel I Lully dislike the Buchannan, more so Tom than Daisy though. I was shocked at how little Daisy seemed to actually care about Gatsby. After reading about how she almost cancelled her wedding with Tom after she received a letter from Gatsby or how she proclaimed that she loved him after their reunion I could not believe that she did not even go to the funeral or even call. I understand that she is probably shocked by all the events that happened (the car crash + Gatsby death most of all) but all she is doing now is trying to forget about it completely and move on with her life like nothing happened. I did not expect Tom to care or even acknowledge that he was at fault for Gatsby death but I expected more from Daisy. 3. This is the last line of the novel. Nick has come to the realization that the American dream is simply that, a dream. He has witnessed the darkness and sadness in pursuing the American dream. He sees that the Buchannan are an extremely dysfunctional and unhappy family even though they seem to have it all, he sees Gatsby struggle in obtaining the dream. Gatsby had almost achieved the perfect American dream in his mind. All he needed was Daisy and his dream would be complete. Well turns out that through all his years of pursuing the dream he had built up Daisy so much in his head that she could not possibly live up to his expectations. Once he finally had Daisy he should have been happy but he wasnt, all he felt was disappointment. I think that the American dream exists because the prize is amazing. In addition as Nick says, everyday it seems that we are closer to obtaining it so we try harder and harder to obtain it in the hopes that one day well wake up and have it. I think becaus e of the events Nick went through he became corrupted and cynical of the world. Gatsby lived in the past and thats one of the reasons why he couldnt achieve his American dream. He was chasing something that was not there anymore -It was sad to see Gatsby watching out for Daisy at her house to ensure her safety and take the blame for hitting Myrtle. He truly loved her and I think at the moment where he saw Daisy acting like nothing happened, eating fried chicken with Tom was the moment that he realized that she did not love him as much as he thought she did. -Nick has seen the dark side of the rich and because of this he has been internally corrupted
